A TraineeSekkhasutta

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Sir, they speak of the one called ‘a trainee’.“‘Sekho, sekho’ti, bhante, vuccati. How is a trainee defined?”Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekho hotī”ti?

“They train, mendicant, that’s why they’re called ‘a trainee’.“Sikkhatīti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccati. What is their training?Kiñca sikkhati? They train in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.Adhisīlampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaññampi sikkhati. They train, that’s why they’re called ‘a trainee’.Sikkhatīti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccatīti.

As a trainee trains,Sekhassa sikkhamānassa, following the straight road,ujumaggānusārino; first they know about ending;Khayasmiṁ paṭhamaṁ ñāṇaṁ, enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.tato aññā anantarā.

Then the knowledge comesTato aññāvimuttassa, such a one, freed through enlightenment,ñāṇaṁ ve hoti tādino; with the end of the fetters of continued existence:Akuppā me vimuttīti, ‘My freedom is unshakable.’”bhavasaṁyojanakkhaye”ti.
