Very Far ApartSuvidūrasutta
“Mendicants, these four things are very far apart.“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, suvidūravidūrāni. What four?Katamāni cattāri? The firmament and the earth. …Nabhañca, bhikkhave, pathavī ca; The near and the far shore of the ocean. …Orimañca, bhikkhave, tīraṁ samuddassa pārimañca; Where the sun rises and where it sets. …Yato ca, bhikkhave, verocano abbhudeti yattha ca atthameti; The teaching of the virtuous and the teaching of the wicked. …Satañca, bhikkhave, dhammo asatañca dhammo; These are the four things very far apart.Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri suvidūravidūrānīti.
The firmament is far from the earth;Nabhañca dūre pathavī ca dūre, they say the other shore of the ocean is far;Pāraṁ samuddassa tadāhu dūre; and where the sun rises is farYato ca verocano abbhudeti, from where that beacon sets.Pabhaṅkaro yattha ca atthameti; But even further apart than that, they say,Tato have dūrataraṁ vadanti, is the teaching of the virtuous from the wicked.Satañca dhammaṁ asatañca dhammaṁ.
The company of the virtuous is reliable;Abyāyiko hoti sataṁ samāgamo, as long as it remains, it stays the same.Yāvāpi tiṭṭheyya tatheva hoti; But the company of the wicked is fickle,Khippañhi veti asataṁ samāgamo, and so the teaching of the virtuous <j>is far from the wicked.”Tasmā sataṁ dhammo asabbhi ārakā”ti.
