“When in a wood I was Sāma the black,“Sāmo yadā vane āsiṁ, created by Sakka.sakkena abhinimmito; I led the lions and tigersPavane sīhabyagghe ca, in the forest by love.mettāya mupanāmayiṁ.

Surrounded by lions and tigers,Sīhabyagghehi dīpīhi, leopards, bears, buffaloes,acchehi mahisehi ca; spotted deer, and wild boar,Pasadamigavarāhehi, I stayed in the forest.parivāretvā vane vasiṁ.

None were scared of me,Na maṁ koci uttasati, nor I of them.napi bhāyāmi kassaci; Sustained by the power of loveMettābalenupatthaddho, I delighted in the forest then.”ramāmi pavane tadā”ti.
