The Ending of DefilementsĀsavakkhayasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, I say that the ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see.“Jānatohaṁ, bhikkhave, passato āsavānaṁ khayaṁ vadāmi, no ajānato no apassato. For one who knows and sees what?Kiñca, bhikkhave, jānato, kiṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti? The ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.Idaṁ dukkhanti, bhikkhave, jānato passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti. Ayaṁ dukkhasamudayoti, bhikkhave, jānato passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti. Ayaṁ dukkhanirodhoti, bhikkhave, jānato passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti. Ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadāti, bhikkhave, jānato passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti. The ending of the defilements is for one who knows and sees this.”Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, jānato evaṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hotī”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“As a trainee trains,“Sekhassa sikkhamānassa, following the straight road, ujumaggānusārino; first they know about ending;Khayasmiṁ paṭhamaṁ ñāṇaṁ, enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.tato aññā anantarā.
Then to one freed through enlightenmentTato aññāvimuttassa, the knowledge of ending arises, vimuttiñāṇamuttamaṁ; the supreme knowledge of freedom,Uppajjati khaye ñāṇaṁ, with the ending of the fetters.khīṇā saṁyojanā iti.
Not by the lazy,Na tvevidaṁ kusītena, or by fools who don’t understandbālenamavijānatā; may this be realized—extinguishment,Nibbānaṁ adhigantabbaṁ, the release from all ties.”sabbaganthappamocanan”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
