This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.“Carato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. They tolerate it and don’t give it up, dispel it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a mendicant is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when walking.Tañce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhivāseti nappajahati na vinodeti na byantīkaroti na anabhāvaṁ gameti.

Suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while standing …Ṭhitassa cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. sitting …Nisinnassa cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. or when lying down while awake.Sayānassa cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno jāgarassa uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Whether walking or standing,“Caraṁ vā yadi vā tiṭṭhaṁ, sitting or lying down, nisinno uda vā sayaṁ; one who thinks a bad thoughtYo vitakkaṁ vitakketi, to do with the domestic lifepāpakaṁ gehanissitaṁ.

is practicing the wrong way,Kummaggaṁ paṭipanno so, lost among things that delude;mohaneyyesu mucchito; such a mendicant is incapableAbhabbo tādiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening.phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.

But one who, whether standing or walking,Yo ca caraṁ vā tiṭṭhaṁ vā, sitting or lying down,Nisinno uda vā sayaṁ; has calmed their thoughts,Vitakkaṁ samayitvāna, loving peace of mind;Vitakkūpasame rato; such a mendicant is capableBhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening.”Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttaman”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
