The Fetter of CravingTaṇhāsaṁyojanasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, I do not see a single fetter, fettered by which people wander and transmigrate for a long time like the fetter of craving.“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekasaṁyojanampi samanupassāmi yena saṁyojanena saṁyuttā sattā dīgharattaṁ sandhāvanti saṁsaranti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, taṇhāsaṁyojanaṁ. Fettered by craving, people wander and transmigrate for a long time.”Taṇhāsaṁyojanena hi, bhikkhave, saṁyuttā sattā dīgharattaṁ sandhāvanti saṁsarantī”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Craving is a person’s partner“Taṇhādutiyo puriso, as they transmigrate on this long journey.dīghamaddhāna saṁsaraṁ; They go from this state to another,Itthabhāvaññathābhāvaṁ, but don’t escape transmigration.saṁsāraṁ nātivattati.
Knowing this danger,Etamādīnavaṁ ñatvā, that craving is the cause of suffering—Taṇhaṁ dukkhassa sambhavaṁ; rid of craving, free of grasping,Vītataṇho anādāno, a mendicant would wander mindful.”Sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
