A Pure MindPasannacittasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of an individual whose mind is pure, I understand:“Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ pasannacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi: ‘If this individual were to die right now, they would be placed in heaven as if delivered there.’‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge’. Why is that?Taṁ kissa hetu? Because their mind is pure.Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, pasannaṁ. Purity of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”Cetopasādahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjantī”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Knowing an individual’s“Pasannacittaṁ ñatvāna, pure mind, ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ; the Buddha explained this matterEtamatthañca byākāsi, in the mendicants’ presence.buddho bhikkhūna santike.
If that individualImamhi cāyaṁ samaye, were to die at this time,kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo; they’d be reborn in heaven,Sugatiṁ upapajjeyya, for their mind is pure.cittaṁ hissa pasāditaṁ.
That sort is raised up as surelyYathā haritvā nikkhipeyya, as if they’d been carried and put there.evamevaṁ tathāvidho; For purity of mind is the reasonCetopasādahetu hi, sentient beings go to a good place.”sattā gacchanti suggatin”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
