Living in SufferingDukkhavihārasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.(…) Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, when a mendicant has two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—“Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharati savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā duggati pāṭikaṅkhā. What two?Katamehi dvīhi? Not guarding the sense doors and eating too much.Indriyesu aguttadvāratāya ca, bhojane amattaññutāya ca. When a mendicant possesses these two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharati savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.”kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā duggati pāṭikaṅkhā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Eye, ear, nose,“Cakkhu sotañca ghānañca, tongue, body, and likewise mind:jivhā kāyo tathā mano; a mendicant who leaves theseEtāni yassa dvārāni, sense doors unguarded—aguttāni ca bhikkhuno.
immoderate in eating,Bhojanamhi amattaññū, sense faculties unrestrained—indriyesu asaṁvuto; reaps sufferingKāyadukkhaṁ cetodukkhaṁ, both physical and mental.dukkhaṁ so adhigacchati.
Burning in body,Ḍayhamānena kāyena, burning in mind,Ḍayhamānena cetasā; by day or by nightDivā vā yadi vā rattiṁ, such a person lives in suffering.”Dukkhaṁ viharati tādiso”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
