MortifyingTapanīyasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“These two things, mendicants, are mortifying.“Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā tapanīyā. What two?Katame dve? It’s when someone hasn’t done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad things, violence and sin.Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco akatakalyāṇo hoti, akatakusalo, akatabhīruttāṇo, katapāpo, kataluddo, katakibbiso. Thinking, ‘I haven’t done good things’, they’re mortified. Thinking, ‘I have done bad things’, they’re mortified. So ‘akataṁ me kalyāṇan’tipi tappati, ‘kataṁ me pāpan’tipi tappati. These are the two things that are mortifying.”Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā tapanīyā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Having done bad things“Kāyaduccaritaṁ katvā, by way of body, vacīduccaritāni ca; speech, and mind,Manoduccaritaṁ katvā, and whatever else is corrupt;yañcaññaṁ dosasañhitaṁ.
not having done good deeds,Akatvā kusalaṁ kammaṁ, and having done many bad, katvānākusalaṁ bahuṁ; when their body breaks up, that witless personKāyassa bhedā duppañño, is reborn in hell.”nirayaṁ sopapajjatī”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
