Searches (2nd)Dutiyaesanāsutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, there are these three searches.“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. What three?Katamā tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path.Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā— These are the three searches.”imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“The search for sensual pleasures, for continued existence,“Kāmesanā bhavesanā, and the search for a spiritual path;brahmacariyesanā saha; the holding tight to the thought, ‘this is the truth’,Iti saccaparāmāso, and the mass of grounds for views—diṭṭhiṭṭhānā samussayā.
for one detached from all lusts,Sabbarāgavirattassa, freed by the ending of craving,taṇhakkhayavimuttino; that searching has been relinquished,Esanā paṭinissaṭṭhā, and those grounds for views eradicated.diṭṭhiṭṭhānā samūhatā; With the ending of searches, a mendicantEsanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, is free of hope and indecision.”nirāso akathaṅkathī”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
