ThoughtsVitakkasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, there are these three unskillful thoughts.“Tayome, bhikkhave, akusalavitakkā. What three?Katame tayo? The thought of status; of getting material things, honor, and popularity; and of fondness for others.Anavaññattipaṭisaṁyutto vitakko, lābhasakkārasilokapaṭisaṁyutto vitakko, parānuddayatāpaṭisaṁyutto vitakko. These are the three unskillful thoughts.”Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo akusalavitakkā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“One concerned with being looked up to,“Anavaññattisaṁyutto, with possessions, honor, and respect,lābhasakkāragāravo; with sharing joys with friends,Sahanandī amaccehi, is far from the ending of fetters.ārā saṁyojanakkhayā.
But one who gives up children and herds,Yo ca puttapasuṁ hitvā, marriage and acquisitions—Vivāhe saṁharāni ca; such a mendicant is capableBhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening.”Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttaman”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
