With Pajjunna’s Daughter (1st)Paṭhamapajjunnadhītusutta
So I have heard.Evaṁ me sutaṁ— At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.
Then, late at night, the glorious Kokanadā, Pajjunna’s daughter, lighting up the entire Great Wood, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,Atha kho kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ mahāvanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. and recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
“Staying in the woods of Vesālī“Vesāliyaṁ vane viharantaṁ, is the Buddha, best of creation.Aggaṁ sattassa sambuddhaṁ; Kokanadā am I who worships him,Kokanadāhamasmi abhivande, Kokanadā, Pajjuna’s daughter.Kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā.
Previously I had only heardSutameva pure āsi, the teaching realized by the Clear-eyed One.Dhammo cakkhumatānubuddho; But now I know it as a witnessSāhaṁ dāni sakkhi jānāmi, while the sage, the Holy One teaches.Munino desayato sugatassa.
There are simpletons who go aboutYe keci ariyaṁ dhammaṁ, denouncing the teaching of the noble ones.Vigarahantā caranti dummedhā; They fall into the terrible Hell of ScreamsUpenti roruvaṁ ghoraṁ, where they suffer long.Cirarattaṁ dukkhaṁ anubhavanti.
There are those who have found <j>acceptance and peaceYe ca kho ariye dhamme, in the teaching of the noble ones.Khantiyā upasamena upetā; After giving up this human body,Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ, they swell the heavenly host.”Devakāyaṁ paripūressantī”ti.
