At Sāvatthī.Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Now at that time a brahmin named Contraphile, who loved contradiction, was residing in Sāvatthī.Tena kho pana samayena paccanīkasāto nāma brāhmaṇo sāvatthiyaṁ paṭivasati.

Then Contraphile thought,Atha kho paccanīkasātassa brāhmaṇassa etadahosi: “Why don’t I go to the ascetic Gotama and“yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ. contradict everything he says?”Yaṁ yadeva samaṇo gotamo bhāsissati taṁ tadevassāhaṁ paccanīkāssan”ti.

At that time the Buddha was walking mindfully in the open air.Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā abbhokāse caṅkamati.

Then the brahmin Contraphile went up to the Buddha, and said to him as he was walking,Atha kho paccanīkasāto brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ caṅkamantaṁ etadavoca: “Ascetic, preach the Dhamma.”“bhaṇa samaṇadhamman”ti.

“Fine words aren’t easy to understand“Na paccanīkasātena, by a lover of contradiction, suvijānaṁ subhāsitaṁ; whose mind is taintedUpakkiliṭṭhacittena, and full of aggression.sārambhabahulena ca.

But when you’ve dispelled aggression,Yo ca vineyya sārambhaṁ, and your suspicious mind, appasādañca cetaso; and you’ve got rid of resentment,Āghātaṁ paṭinissajja, then you’ll understand fine words.”sa ve jaññā subhāsitan”ti.

When he had spoken, the brahmin Contraphile said to the Buddha,Evaṁ vutte, paccanīkasāto brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! …“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
