With VaṅgīsaVaṅgīsasutta

At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

Now at that time Vaṅgīsa had recently attained perfection. While experiencing the bliss of freedom, on that occasion he recited these verses:Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso aciraarahattappatto hutvā vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedī tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

“We used to wander, drunk on poetry,“Kāveyyamattā vicarimha pubbe, village to village, town to town.Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ; Then we saw the Buddha,Athaddasāma sambuddhaṁ, and faith arose in us.Saddhā no upapajjatha.

He taught me Dhamma:So me dhammamadesesi, the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.khandhāyatanadhātuyo; When I heard his teachingTassāhaṁ dhammaṁ sutvāna, I went forth to homelessness.pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ.

It was truly for the benefit of manyBahunnaṁ vata atthāya, that the sage achieved awakening—bodhiṁ ajjhagamā muni; for the monks and for the nunsBhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnañca, who see that they’ve reached certainty.ye niyāmagataddasā.

It was so welcome for meSvāgataṁ vata me āsi, to be in the presence of the Buddha.mama buddhassa santike; I’ve attained the three knowledges,Tisso vijjā anuppattā, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.

I know my past lives,Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi, my clairvoyance is purified,Dibbacakkhuṁ visodhitaṁ; I am master of three knowledges, <j>attained in psychic power,Tevijjo iddhipattomhi, expert in encompassing the minds of others.”Cetopariyāyakovido”ti.
