In the past I worshiped the sacred flame,“Aggiṁ candañca sūriyañca, the moon, the sun, and the gods.devatā ca namassihaṁ; Having gone to a river ford,Nadītitthāni gantvāna, I plunged into the water.udakaṁ oruhāmihaṁ.
Undertaking many vows,Bahūvatasamādānā, I shaved half my head.aḍḍhaṁ sīsassa olikhiṁ; Preparing a bed on the ground,Chamāya seyyaṁ kappemi, I ate no food at night.rattiṁ bhattaṁ na bhuñjahaṁ.
I loved my ornaments and decorations;Vibhūsāmaṇḍanaratā, and with baths and oil-massages,nhāpanucchādanehi ca; I pandered to this body,Upakāsiṁ imaṁ kāyaṁ, racked by desire for pleasures of the senses.kāmarāgena aṭṭitā.
But then I gained faith,Tato saddhaṁ labhitvāna, and went forth to homelessness.pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ; Truly seeing the body,Disvā kāyaṁ yathābhūtaṁ, desire for sensual pleasure is eradicated.kāmarāgo samūhato.
All rebirths are cut off,Sabbe bhavā samucchinnā, wishes and aspirations too.icchā ca patthanāpi ca; Unyoked from all yokes,Sabbayogavisaṁyuttā, I’ve found peace of mind.santiṁ pāpuṇi cetaso”ti.
