Searches (1st)Paṭhamaesanāsutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, there are these three searches.“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. What three?Katamā tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path.Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā— These are the three searches.”imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Stilled, aware,“Samāhito sampajāno, a mindful disciple of the Buddhasato buddhassa sāvako; understands searches,Esanā ca pajānāti, the cause of searches, esanānañca sambhavaṁ.
where they cease,Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, and the path that leads to their ending.maggañca khayagāminaṁ; With the ending of searches, a mendicantEsanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, is hungerless, quenched.”nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
