With Pajjunna’s Daughter (2nd)Dutiyapajjunnadhītusuttaṁ

So I have heard.Evaṁ me sutaṁ— At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

Then, late at night, the glorious Kokanadā the Younger, Pajjunna’s daughter, lighting up the entire Great Wood, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,Atha kho cūḷakokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ mahāvanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. and recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā cūḷakokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

“She came here, beautiful as a flash of lightning,“Idhāgamā vijjupabhāsavaṇṇā, Kokanadā, Pajjunna’s daughter.Kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā; Revering the Buddha and the teaching,Buddhañca dhammañca namassamānā, she spoke these verses full of meaning.Gāthācimā atthavatī abhāsi.

The teaching is such thatBahunāpi kho taṁ vibhajeyyaṁ, I could analyze it in many different ways.Pariyāyena tādiso dhammo; However, I will state the meaning in briefSaṅkhittamatthaṁ lapayissāmi, as far as I have learned it by heart.Yāvatā me manasā pariyattaṁ.

You should never do anything badPāpaṁ na kayirā vacasā manasā, by speech or mind or body in all the world.Kāyena vā kiñcana sabbaloke; Having given up sensual pleasures, <j>mindful and aware,Kāme pahāya satimā sampajāno, you shouldn’t keep doing <j>what’s painful and pointless.”Dukkhaṁ na sevetha anatthasaṁhitan”ti.
