In Search of Gratification (Interior)Paṭhamaassādapariyesanasutta
“Mendicants, I went in search of the eye’s gratification,“Cakkhussāhaṁ, bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yo cakkhussa assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the eye’s gratification.Yāvatā cakkhussa assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of the eye’s drawback,Cakkhussāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ādīnavapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yo cakkhussa ādīnavo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the eye’s drawback.Yāvatā cakkhussa ādīnavo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of escape from the eye,Cakkhussāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nissaraṇapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yaṁ cakkhussa nissaraṇaṁ tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of escape from the eye.Yāvatā cakkhussa nissaraṇaṁ, paññāya me taṁ sudiṭṭhaṁ.
I went in search of the ear’s …Sotassāhaṁ, bhikkhave … nose’s …ghānassāhaṁ, bhikkhave … tongue’s …jivhāyāhaṁ bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. body’s …Yāvatā jivhāya nissaraṇaṁ, paññāya me taṁ sudiṭṭhaṁ …pe… mind’s gratification, manassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yo manassa assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the mind’s gratification.Yāvatā manassa assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of the mind’s drawback,Manassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ādīnavapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yo manassa ādīnavo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the mind’s drawback.Yāvatā manassa ādīnavo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of escape from the mind,Manassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nissaraṇapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it.Yaṁ manassa nissaraṇaṁ tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of escape from the mind.Yāvatā manassa nissaraṇaṁ, paññāya me taṁ sudiṭṭhaṁ.
As long as I didn’t truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening …Yāvakīvañcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ channaṁ ajjhattikānaṁ āyatanānaṁ assādañca assādato, ādīnavañca ādīnavato, nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ nābbhaññāsiṁ …pe…
But when I did truly understand …paccaññāsiṁ.
Knowledge and vision arose in me:Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’”‘akuppā me vimutti, ayamantimā jāti, natthi dāni punabbhavo’”ti.
