The Practice Fit for UprootingSamugghātasāruppasutta

“Mendicants, I will teach you the practice fit for uprooting all conceiving.“Sabbamaññitasamugghātasāruppaṁ vo, bhikkhave, paṭipadaṁ desessāmi. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak. …Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmīti.

And what is the practice fit for uprooting all conceiving?Katamā ca sā, bhikkhave, sabbamaññitasamugghātasāruppā paṭipadā?

It’s when a mendicant does not conceive anything to be the eye, does not conceive it in the eye, does not conceive it as the eye, and does not conceive that ‘the eye is mine.’Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhuṁ na maññati, cakkhusmiṁ na maññati, cakkhuto na maññati, cakkhuṁ meti na maññati. They don’t conceive anything to be sights, they don’t conceive it in sights, they don’t conceive it as sights, and they don’t conceive that ‘sights are mine.’Rūpe na maññati, rūpesu na maññati, rūpato na maññati, rūpā meti na maññati. They don’t conceive eye consciousness …Cakkhuviññāṇaṁ na maññati, cakkhuviññāṇasmiṁ na maññati, cakkhuviññāṇato na maññati, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ meti na maññati. eye contact …Cakkhusamphassaṁ na maññati, cakkhusamphassasmiṁ na maññati, cakkhusamphassato na maññati, cakkhusamphasso meti na maññati. They don’t conceive anything to be the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises dependent on eye contact. They don’t conceive it in that, they don’t conceive it as that, and they don’t conceive that ‘that is mine.’Yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati …pe…

They don’t conceive anything to be the ear … nose … tongue …jivhaṁ na maññati, jivhāya na maññati, jivhāto na maññati, jivhā meti na maññati. body …Yampidaṁ jivhāsamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati …pe… mind …manaṁ na maññati, manasmiṁ na maññati, manato na maññati, mano meti na maññati. They don’t conceive anything to be the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises dependent on mind contact. They don’t conceive it in that, they don’t conceive it as that, and they don’t conceive that ‘that is mine.’Yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati.

They don’t conceive anything to be all, they don’t conceive it in all, they don’t conceive it as all, and they don’t conceive that ‘all is mine.’Sabbaṁ na maññati, sabbasmiṁ na maññati, sabbato na maññati, sabbaṁ meti na maññati. Not conceiving, they don’t grasp at anything in the world. So evaṁ amaññamāno na ca kiñci loke upādiyati. Not grasping, they’re not anxious. Not being anxious, they personally become extinguished.Anupādiyaṁ na paritassati. Aparitassaṁ paccattaññeva parinibbāyati.

They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.

This is the practice fit for uprooting all conceiving.”Ayaṁ kho sā, bhikkhave, sabbamaññitasamugghātasāruppā paṭipadā”ti.
