Māra’s Snares (1st)Paṭhamamārapāsasutta

So I have heard.Evaṁ me sutaṁ— At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi in the deer park at Isipatana.ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati isipatane migadāye. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Mendicants!”“bhikkhavo”ti.

“Venerable sir,” they replied.“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this:Bhagavā etadavoca:

“Mendicants, I have attained and realized supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.“Mayhaṁ kho, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttarā vimutti anuppattā, anuttarā vimutti sacchikatā. You too should attain and realize supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.”Tumhepi, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ anupāpuṇātha, anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ sacchikarothā”ti.

Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“You’re bound by Māra’s snares,“Baddhosi mārapāsena, both human and heavenly.ye dibbā ye ca mānusā; You’re bound by Māra’s bonds:Mārabandhanabaddhosi, you won’t escape me, ascetic!”na me samaṇa mokkhasī”ti.

“I’m freed from Māra’s snares,“Muttāhaṁ mārapāsena, both human and heavenly.Ye dibbā ye ca mānusā; I’m freed from Māra’s bonds.Mārabandhanamuttomhi, You’re beaten, terminator!”Nihato tvamasi antakā”ti.

Then Māra … vanished right there.Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
