At Pāṭaliputta.Pāṭaliputtanidānaṁ.

“Reverend, they speak of this thing called the ‘spiritual path’.“‘Brahmacariyaṁ, brahmacariyan’ti, āvuso ānanda, vuccati. What is the spiritual path? And what is the culmination of the spiritual path?”Katamaṁ nu kho, āvuso, brahmacariyaṁ, katamaṁ brahmacariyapariyosānan”ti?

“Good, good, Reverend Bhadda!“Sādhu sādhu, āvuso bhadda. Your approach and eloquence are excellent, and it’s a good question.Bhaddako kho te, āvuso bhadda, ummaṅgo, bhaddakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ, kalyāṇī paripucchā. For you asked:Evañhi tvaṁ, āvuso bhadda, pucchasi: ‘They speak of this thing called “the spiritual path”.‘brahmacariyaṁ, brahmacariyanti, āvuso ānanda, vuccati. What is the spiritual path? And what is the culmination of the spiritual path?’”Katamaṁ nu kho, āvuso, brahmacariyaṁ, katamaṁ brahmacariyapariyosānan’”ti?

“Yes, reverend.”“Evamāvuso”ti.

“The spiritual path is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:“Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo brahmacariyaṁ, seyyathidaṁ— right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.

The ending of greed, hate, and delusion:Yo kho, āvuso, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo— this is the culmination of the spiritual path.”idaṁ brahmacariyapariyosānan”ti.
