At Sāvatthī.Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

“Mendicants, I will teach you the spiritual path and the goal of the spiritual path.“Brahmacariyañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, brahmacariyatthañca. Listen …Taṁ suṇātha.

And what is the spiritual path?Katamañca, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaṁ? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ— right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. This is called the spiritual path.Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaṁ.

And what is the goal of the spiritual path?Katamo ca, bhikkhave, brahmacariyattho? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.Yo kho, bhikkhave, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo— This is called the goal of the spiritual path.”ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, brahmacariyattho”ti.
