Living in HappinessSukhavihārasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Mendicants, when a mendicant has two qualities they live happily in this very life—without distress, anguish, and fever—“Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme sukhaṁ viharati avighātaṁ anupāyāsaṁ apariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a good rebirth.kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugati pāṭikaṅkhā. What two?Katamehi dvīhi? Guarding the sense doors and moderation in eating.Indriyesu guttadvāratāya ca, bhojane mattaññutāya ca. When a mendicant possesses these two qualities they live happily in this very life—without distress, anguish, and fever—Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme sukhaṁ viharati avighātaṁ anupāyāsaṁ apariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a good rebirth.”kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugati pāṭikaṅkhā”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter.Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said:Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Eye, ear, nose,“Cakkhu sotañca ghānañca, tongue, body, and likewise mind:jivhā kāyo tathā mano; a mendicant who makes theseEtāni yassa dvārāni, sense doors well guarded—suguttāni ca bhikkhuno.
eating in moderation,Bhojanamhi ca mattaññū, restrained in the sense faculties—indriyesu ca saṁvuto; reaps happinessKāyasukhaṁ cetosukhaṁ, both physical and mental.sukhaṁ so adhigacchati.
Not burning in body,Aḍayhamānena kāyena, not burning in mind,Aḍayhamānena cetasā; by day or by nightDivā vā yadi vā rattiṁ, such a person lives in happiness.”Sukhaṁ viharati tādiso”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
